Most movers find that packing the kitchen is the most challenging part of a move and because of this leave the kitchen for last. Before you decide that you would prefer just to throw everything away, use some of these tips to help you see what you should throw out, how to move the things you are keeping and what should be given away.
Handling fragile items
There is a good chance that you will have an excess of the basics like flour sugar etc. These items must be placed in more secured packaging before they are packed away for the move. Visit your local hardware store or container store and purchase a few heavy-duty sealable containers which will help to prevent serious spillage. In general plan to, at least, place tearable packages into ziplock bags. Use some masking tape to cover the tops of your salt, pepper and any other shakers that you own to prevent them from spilling during the move. Get rid of your glass bottles, even if you pack them well, bottles of spaghetti sauce, olive oil, and bottled drinks are much more likely to spill or burst open in transit. Save yourself a messy cleanup and see if you can use up or give away your breakable items ahead of time.
Packing the food
As soon as you have decided what you will bring to your new home, you should pack all of your heavier items first. These items include jars of peanut butter and cans of pasta sauce on the bottom of your moving boxes. Your lighter items such as boxes of crackers should be layered on top of the box. As you start to pack all of the things that you plan to keep, consider their weight. If you are bringing a lot of canned goods, then use small to medium sized boxes so that you can transport them more easily. Once you have packed up the food that you will be bringing with you, make sure that you label the boxes clearly as perishable. Try to divide your boxes by the type of food in them, for example; one box will have only spices in it while another will have canned goods. MAke sure that you label what is in which box so you can get to it easier.
Final preparations
Make sure that you go through the house and check all of the nooks and crannies where you stored food. Places like the freezer in the basement, or the hall closet where you kept your kids snacks. If you are planning to take your fridge with you, make sure that you unplug it twenty-four hours in advance, so the freezer has time to defrost. It doesn’t matter if you are getting rid of a whole pantry or just a few items, there are a few places where you can donate these perishables so that they don’t go to waste. Donate it to a charity or see if your neighbors will take it off your hands.
