The bed is not like most large furniture you will be packing and loading onto the truck when moving, and not only because it is the most important item that you will bring with you. Your bed is different because instead of simply wrapping it in a few moving blankets and carrying it out of your house, you will have to disassemble it before you pack and wrap each part separately and then load it onto the moving truck. Typical beds come in several different pieces that you will have to take care of when the time comes to pack, and this includes the bedding, the mattress, the headboard and the footboard. In this article, we provide you with some tips on how to correctly disassemble your bed and prepare it for your move.

Disassembling your bed

Disassembling and preparing your bed for your move will require more than just taking your pillows off and throwing them in a pile. You are also going to need to take apart your entire bed frame, including the headboard and footboard, so you will be able to maneuver it out of your house and onto the truck.  Begin by removing all of your bedding and pillows from the bed. You will need to remove all of the sheets, quilts, and comforters and pack them separately for the move. Make sure that these items are wrapped carefully or packed in plastic comforter covers so that they don’t get damaged on the truck. Lift and remove the box springs and mattress from the bed frame. Your bed will be moved in five separate pieces, the bed frame, the headboard, the box spring, the footboard and the mattress. Since the mattress is the most expensive, largest and heaviest piece, you will have to take the necessary steps to protect it before your move. Carefully unscrew each screw or bolt that is holding both the footboard and headboard to the frame. \make sure that you keep track of where you removed each screw so you can easily reassemble it when the time comes. To do this effectively, you will need to pack all the screws in a clear plastic bag that is properly labeled and tape the bags to the bed using packing tape. This way the parts stay with the bed during the relocation.

Wrapping the bedding and frame

Pack your mattress and bedding separately, and you can either purchase a specially designed mattress box that you can order based on the size the mattress that you plan to move. Or you can wrap the mattress in moving blankets or packing wrap to protect it while it is being moved. Use moving blankets or moving pads to help cushion the headboard and footboard from any potential damage they could sustain while they are being moved. If any part of your bed frame or headboard is made of wood, do not use bubble wrap or plastic wrap as this can damage the wood.
