When you’re packing up to move across the country, the last thing on your mind is what to do with all the gadgets and widgets. But, just like everything else in your life, it needs to be packed up and transported safely. Here are a few tips on how to pack technology like a pro when moving cross country.

Start by Gathering Different Packing Supplies

When packing for a move, there are certain supplies you will need in order to make the process go smoothly. Below is a list of the most essential packing supplies:

Unplug Everything and Don’t Forget to Record the Process

When moving long distances, the packing process can get hectic. That’s why it is important to create a packing list in the beginning. On it, you should write down not only the objects that need to be packed up, but it is also important to remember to unplug all of the tech. Make sure to unplug the TV, phone, stereo, your computer, and any other fragile devices. By doing this, you’ll help reduce the risk of damage to your valuable items.

Another thing to do if you are not tech-savvy is to record the whole process. When you start pulling cables and taking down moving parts of your technology, turn on the phone and record the whole process. This way you’ll know where everything goes when the unpacking process starts.

Use Product Manual and Original Packaging if You Have Them

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for packing and storing electronics. After all, they are the most knowledgeable on how to safeguard the merchandise.  If you don’t have it in a hard copy, for more information, consult the manufacturer’s website.

Another important thing when packing up technology is boxes. If you have saved the original packaging just put the items inside. They will fit the dimensions perfectly, and most importantly they mostly come with padding materials already built-in.

Separate Cables and Mark Them With Stickers

When you start unplugging everything there will be a lot of cables. Most of them look the same, but still if you want to avoid having nightmares when you start unpacking it is essential to separate them as soon as you unplug them from the electronic device. To do so you should use stickers and tape (preferably various ones in different colors).

Create a color-coded chart, so you know what color represents what. Place small colored stickers on each cord and the same color sticker where the cord joins to the device when disassembling electronics such as laptops, stereos, and other equipment with several connections. When it comes time to reassemble your gadgets, you won’t have to worry about figuring out what goes where.

Start Wrapping Everything Up

After you unplug and separated everything it is time to start wrapping items up. If you don’t have original packaging use the various supplies you obtained. Start with bubble wrap. Enwrap all of your fragile items such as PC towers and monitors in it. Secure it with duct tape, and then set it in the best-sized box.

Before closing up the crate fill up the empty space with padding materials. For this, you can use packing peanuts, paper, or even some soft cloth (if you run out of packing supplies). When the box is filled, tape it over with wide tape and write fragile on the side and you are good to go.

Call Long Distance Movers to Ensure Storage is Temperature Controlled

When hiring cross-country movers that provide various long-distance moving services, you’ll probably use their storage option. However, before you let a long-distance moving company handle your valuable belongings ask about the temperature in their storage facilities. The professional cross-country moving company will provide you with climate-controlled and surveilled facilities that will ensure the safety of all of your belongings.
